Removing Emotion: Logical Comparison - The Phone Saga Continues

When I find it difficult to remove emotion from a situation I find that adding stupid amounts of logic really help. Then I can know I'm making an educated decision instead of an emotional one. Sadly, in my limited time of doing so, my logical decisions rarely lead me to the emotional one I started with. Basically I've lived my entire life making bad decisions. Awesomesauce.

Ok, so here goes. We're looking to possibly switch to RepublicWireless. It's a no-contract $25 a month phone plan.

So I want to compare the cheaper plan to what we're getting now.

The first (daunting) task is to compare each plan, coverage, specs, price and make a logical decision.

The plan we're looking at is $25 a month for unlimited talk and  text with unlimited data over WiFi and OnNetwork 3G.

My first concern is that our WiFi at home blows so while it's a huge bonus to people who live in heavily populated areas who can mooch off of open WiFi connections all they want to get awesome cheap service. However, this is Vermont and they're literally using horses to install fiber optic cables to remote areas (true story).

Ok so let's see what network they use. It's Sprint. Not super jazzed about that but again, that's based on emotion (not really sure why, but we'll go with it) and after reviewing a coverage map for Sprint in my area, the signal is spottier than I'd like, but it seems fine enough. I'm going to start crowd sourcing for feedback. After asking MSP if he had seen the map he confirmed he had and wasn't concerned because of what we would save. I call shenanigans because it's not worth saving money if we're miserable because we can't order pizza (the one godforsaken food that can be delivered to my doorstep) or surf the interwebs because our signal sucks. One point against MSP. Methinks he would cheap out on everything and be miserable if it meant saving a buck. Homey don't play that. I'll smack anyone with a sock full of quarters if they think I'm going to cheap out for the sake of cheaping. That's where I feel like emotion and logic can meet. It's like getting the second cheapest bottle of wine. It's not shit but it's not baller status. It's affordable and I'm fine with that.

Onto the next item: Phone comparison

So Republic only has first gen Moto phones. Not super jazzed about that but again, I only really need a camera that texts and checks email, NYT, Weather and Facebook. Let's not lose focus on our priorities.

However, the Moto G, while it gets amazing reviews, only has a 5 MP tap-to-focus camera whereas my old ass iPhone has 8MP. I started doing some of my own comparison and got bored with it real quick. On an off chance I typed it into the googlemachine and ended up finding this glorious piece of the interwebs.

Because of our priorities (none of which really involve talking on the phone all that much, just in case you forgot) I'm focusing solely on camera and battery life.

The biggest issue I can see with the Moto vs. the iPhone is lack of information on this site. While it outranks the iPhone at less than half the price (score one for logic and saving), there aren't all important items spelled out, which is concerning. (no points for anyone. I hate concerning facts.)

While it looks like 5MP vs 8MP isn't a huge deal, what is worth considering is that all of the blogs I read are saying that it's a great phone with a mediocre camera (fail) and good battery life. I'm willing to give it a shot but I'm not excited about it. Part of me thinks I would rather go with a different Pay as you go (PAYGO) carrier with better service and phones. Now to see if I find something better.

Is it possible that my emotional side is finding additional logic to make even better decisions? Let's not get excited, that is basically a superpower no woman should ever possess. Especially not this one.

Stay tuned for more on emotion vs. logic - the  phone edition.
